Belize River Lodge Fishing
Brad Staples with fly-caught tarpon and Jose the guide. Larry Schoenborn used to host annual groups at Belize River Lodge.
Sight casting the flats is Belize River Lodge's specialty, with bonefish, tarpon, permit, and great snook fishing on the rivers. Reef dwellers include jacks and barracuda. Three out of four anglers pursue the Super Grand Slam. Approximately 90 percent of their fishing takes place on the flats. During a 6-day package, you'll fish the saltwater flats, cayes, reef, mangrove channels, Belize River, Sibun River, Manatee River, and several other creeks and lagoons. Great flats fishing is a short, easy run from the Lodge. Season: The Lodge is open year-round, with peak fishing for bonefish and tarpon from March through June. Travel Time: The flats are a short, easy run from the Lodge - only about three miles up the river. The river mouth is about 10 minutes away by boat, and the nearest bonefishing flat is about 20 minutes from the Lodge.
The Fishing Program:
Methods: Spin casting or fly fishing. Guides: Knowledgeable, English-speaking local guides are helpful and friendly. Boats:23 ft. fiberglass panga skiffs outfitted with Honda four-stroke 50-HP motors, a leaning/casting post, chairs, and a guide platform. You'll fish two anglers per boat and guide—only one angler fishes at a time. You'll fish from the bow of the skiff. Angler Rotation: Only one angler can fish at a time. The rotation is determined by the number of fish caught, the number of casts made, or simply by the clock. The guides will ensure each angler has equal time to fish throughout the day. Permit, bonefish, and tarpon must always be released. Barracuda, grouper, and one snook may be kept for the table, but size restrictions apply. Fishing Equipment: No equipment or tackle is included in the package. Fly outfit rentals are available for $20 per person per day with a $250 breakage fee. Spin outfits can be rented for $15 per day, with a $150 breakage fee. There is a small tackle shop with an assortment of flies, lures, backing, lines, leaders, and tippets. Our confirmation packet includes a detailed packing list. Fly Tying Bench: The Lodge has a fly-tying bench equipped with tying materials for guest use. If you have a particular fly that you like to tie, we recommend bringing some of those materials with you. If you would like instructions on tying flies during your stay, the owner and several guides are available to assist you. Fishing License: A license is not included, $25 per person for the week or $10 per day.
Year-Round Bonefishing
Charlie Swett with Hosted Week Bonefish
Bonefishing in Belize is year-round. The bonefish found here are generally smaller than in other countries, but they are abundant. Typically, bonefish in this ecosystem weigh between 2 and 8 pounds, with the majority being around 3 pounds. About 20% of the flats are wadeable for fishing for bonefish or permit. However, keep in mind that these wadeable flats are usually the first to become unfishable in windy conditions.
A Typical Fishing Day: 6:00 a.m. - Enjoy coffee on the veranda. Early mornings are an ideal time to take out your binoculars and observe the diverse array of wild tropical birds. 7:00 a.m. - Have breakfast. 7:30 a.m. - Grab your gear and head to the dock. The guides will be on the boats, and depending on the weather, you'll discuss where to fish, what to target, and what to use. Travel time to the fishing spots from the Lodge ranges from 20 to 40 minutes. Mid-day - Your guide will find a shady spot for lunch. You'll enjoy a delicious boxed lunch that includes sandwiches, fruit, chips, dessert, soft drinks, beer, or water. This is also a good time to take a power nap. After lunch, you'll return to fishing.
You may see various species of birds and other wildlife, such as manatees, howler monkeys, iguanas, turtles, and crocodiles, while fishing from the Lodge. 5:00 - 5:30 p.m. - The skiffs head back to the Lodge. Before dinner, relax with drinks and appetizers while sharing fishing stories on the veranda or the screened-in porch. 7:00 p.m. - A delicious family-style dinner will be served. Afterward, you can relax or tie flies.
