Ascension Bay offers one of the world's most diverse saltwater flats fisheries. Target healthy populations of bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, and barracuda during a single day. Travel Time: The broad flats of Ascension Bay are immediately accessible just south of the Lodge. Anglers can also fish Boca Paila Lagoon, about a 45-minute boat ride away for no added fee. Boca Paila is known for excellent tarpon and snook fishing, and its protected lagoon system features mangroves, channels, creeks, and shallow flats. Season: Pesca Maya is open for year-round fishing, with peak season from mid-November to June.
Year-Round Grand Slam Potential
Ascension Bay is especially famous for its Grand Slam potential—landing a bonefish, permit, and tarpon in one day—or the even more elusive Super Grand Slam by adding a snook. Ascension Bay and Boca Paila Species: Tarpon — particularly juvenile/resident tarpon around mangrove edges, channels, and lagoons. Snook — a major attraction, commonly targeted along mangrove shorelines, creek mouths, and channels. Snook fishing is best October through December. Bonefish — found on shallow flats within the lagoon system. Permit — present as well, although Ascension Bay is generally the area's more famous permit fishery. Other Species: Barracuda, Jack Crevalle, and more.
The Fishing Program
Boats: 23-foot Mexican flats pangas, specially designed for shallow-water fishing, equipped with poling platforms, casting platforms with a leaning bar at the bow, rod holders, radios, and Yamaha 40- or 50-hp four-stroke engines. You'll fish two anglers and two guides per boat. Guides: English-speaking guides. Each boat has a head guide and an assistant guide, providing an extra set of eyes for spotting fish while wading and helping manage fly line on the casting deck. Some assistant guides are already well seasoned, while others are developing their skills and learning the trade alongside the head guide. Fishing Equipment: No equipment is provided. Daily rentals are $25 for a fly outfit or $15 for a spin outfit. A replacement fee of $50 applies to lost or broken fly rods and $30 for lost or broken spinning rods. A detailed list of what to bring is included in our confirmation packet. Tackle Shop: The Lodge's tackle shop carries flies, leaders, lures, jigs, plastics, hooks, fly-tying material, shirts, hats, and cigars. Fishing License: $27 per person per week (not included).
