Jurassic Lake Lodge
2025 TRIP REPORT

December 6-13, 2025
Jurassic Lake Lodge - Argentina

Guy Schoenborn with giant rainbow trout at Jurassic Lake Lodge in Argentina.

Fly Fishing Only.
Group Size:  12 anglers

My trip started early—the alarm went off at 1:45 a.m. Thursday morning. I needed to get to the Billings airport in time for my 5:10 a.m. flight departure. I arrived in Buenos Aires the next day at 7:30 a.m. From the international airport (EZE), I took a taxi to the domestic airport (AEP) for my flight to El Calafate (FTE). I arrived in El Calafate at 7:00 p.m., checked into my hotel, walked downtown, and had a nice dinner. We had a 6:15 a.m. shuttle arranged to pick up all the anglers and drive them to the airport for our one-hour and 15-minute charter flight to Jurassic Lake Lodge.

Upon arrival, we had a nice breakfast, set up our fishing gear, and went out fishing. The first day was a free-for-all, and most of the group went down to the mouth of the Barrancoso River. Normally, the anglers are split into four groups of three to fish designated beats with their guide for half a day and then fish another beat in the afternoon after eating lunch.

I decided to let my clients fish the river mouth, and I went on a hike and fished the river for about a half mile. I landed about 10 rainbows ranging from 4 to 10 pounds while fishing the little pockets and larger pools. You either have to do your best to control the fish and get them to the bank quickly, or risk a long run downstream. I was able to land most of them quickly, but I did have a couple that wiped me out on a long run, where they were hard to chase. My clients had results similar to or even better than mine while fishing the river mouth.

The rainbows really stack up in the first couple hundred yards of the river above the lake, getting primed for their upstream spawning run. Due to the river running higher than normal, we were only able to fish the right side of the river mouth one morning. We kept six anglers on the left side after that and had the guys that were supposed to be on the right side fish the upper half of the run, and others fish the lower half. The other anglers fished the Bay of Pigs and the river above the lower first run. The Bay of Pigs did not fish well because of high winds most days. We had days with winds in the 40-70 mph range. We were able to fish the river mouth and the upper river well, even in those high wind conditions.

We had at least four rainbows over 20 pounds. Kirk Chiapella, Gary Fritch, and Jim Sawhill landed 20-pounders, and I was able to bring a 21.5-pounder to the net. We had many other bows that were 15-19 pounds. There is no place in the world with the size and quantity of large rainbows comparable to Jurassic Lake.

The fishing isn’t the only thing that is outstanding at Jurassic Lake Lodge. The lunches and dinners are by far and away the best meals I have ever had at any lodge and possibly any restaurant I have been to. The two best steaks I have ever had were at Jurassic Lake Lodge. We had Argentine Asado lamb and beef, short ribs, flank steak, rib eye, and many other outstanding dishes.
