My 2024 hosted week at Lago Strobel, also known as Jurassic Lake, was incredible. The new shuttle flight option from El Calafate ($820.00) was worth the extra cost. You gain extra fishing time on your arrival day, plus you eliminate the 5-hour drive from El Calafate, much of the drive on very rough roads. The flight was about an hour each way. The mountains and scenery were stunning. You have no idea how much water there is around Jurassic Lake without seeing all the pothole lakes nearby from the air.
The meals were outstanding, some of the best I have had at a fishing operation. We had Argentine barbequed lamb, grilled steaks, beef short ribs, pork roast, chicken casserole, pizza, empanadas, and much more. The desserts were excellent, too. You will most likely gain weight on this trip.
You go to Jurassic Lake for the giant rainbows in big numbers. It did not disappoint us. The Barancoso River was at a good level, and the water was clear. Midway through the trip, the river came up 8-10 inches and stayed clear. It might have made the fishing even better at the confluence of the lake and river.
I fished the river twice from the lake to the Aquarium Pool. The first time, I landed 20 rainbows from 3-12 pounds; the second time, the water had risen, and I only landed one larger fish because the water was too fast and there was no holding water. The lower river and both sides of the mouth where it enters the lake were on fire. I personally landed over 50 rainbows the last afternoon at the river mouth, including a 19-pounder, which was my best of the week. Herb Fritch landed a 20-pounder, and Landry Seedig landed a 19 and 17.5-pounder during the week. Most of the anglers in my group landed a 15-plus pounder during their stay here.
We used balanced leeches in black, olive, or brown; mop flies in white, chartreuse, or tan; San Juan worms, prince nymphs, copper johns, and beads. Everything caught fish.
There is absolutely no doubt that Jurassic Lake has the best fishing for numbers of giant rainbow trout in the world.
