Aniak River Lodge Main Page

This August marked my 46th week of fishing, guiding, and hosting trips on the Aniak River.
The Aniak is my favorite Alaska freshwater fishing trip because of the numbers and varieties of fish, and the lack of fishing competition. You can catch all five species of Alaska salmon, rainbow trout, dolly varden, grayling, sheefish, and northern pike.
My 2025 hosted week did not disappoint. We caught rainbows over 27 inches and good numbers over 24 inches, dolly varden to 23 inches in spectacular spawning colors, many grayling to 18 inches, sheefish to 15 pounds, pike in the upper 30-inch range, and lots of silvers in the 4–12-pound range.
We had excellent fishing weather, mostly overcast with little rain or wind. The river was the lowest I have ever seen in the 28 years I have fished it, and it still fished well. That is the good thing about the Aniak, it fishes well in high water, low water, and in between. I have never had a day when we did not catch fish. During my 46 weeks of fishing on the Aniak, we have consistently had good fishing.
The tent camp is one of the nicest in Alaska, featuring heated 15x30-foot WeatherPort Industrial-type tents. There will be two anglers per tent. Each tent has a toilet, a hot shower, and towels. The full-size beds are comfortable, complete with sheets, a blanket, and a comforter. The large dining tent has water, soda, and coffee from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The camp has Starlink Wi-Fi and has batteries available for CPAPs if needed.
Ian, the chef, does a superb job with pulled pork, fish, chicken, ribeye steaks, and a chicken wing/pizza night. Breakfast options include omelets, hash browns, bacon, pancakes, oatmeal, coffee, and orange juice. Lunches are a variety of tortilla wraps, soup, chili, chips, candy, granola bars, and fruit. You can even request a shore lunch of freshly caught silver salmon or dolly varden fillets. Ian will meet you on the river to prepare your catch.
Mo Tidemanis landed a 15-pound sheefish and a 23-inch dolly in stunning spawning colors. Mike Matus caught five sheefish. I landed a 27-plus-inch rainbow, and there were good numbers of 24-27-inch bows landed. Some of my anglers landed over 40 silvers in a day.
Silvers were caught on pink bunny leeches, pink/purple dolly llamas, and pink wogs. Most of the rainbows were caught on flesh flies and 6, 8, 10, and 12mm beads. We had a good number of rainbows and grayling caught on mouse patterns.
Almost all of my 15 clients on this trip have rebooked for 2026. If you would like to join me next August 14-21 or 21-28, please get in touch with Brad Staples or me. Don’t wait, the space is filling up fast. The Aniak is a great trip.
