Agua Boa Amazon Lodge TRIP REPORT

Nov. 18 - Dec. 2, 2023

by Guy Schoenborn

My two hosted weeks at Agua Boa Lodge in 2023 were the best weeks for big peacock bass in my 20-plus weeks of fly-fishing there that I have seen. We had multiple days with two anglers in a boat, landing 10 or more peacocks over 10 pounds per day.

Dave Holecek landed a 16.5-pounder for the largest peacock the first week. We had at least five others that were 16 pounds that week. Paul Young landed a 19.5-pounder on the first day of the second week. Dale Krenek, Eric Ensley, Tim Lang, and Dave Niehaus all landed 18-pounders. We also had many others in the 13-17-pound range. Mark Flood caught three over 10 pounds one day on poppers. Eric Estey landed an 8-pound butterfly peacock, and Dave Niehaus landed a 7-pounder. Those are giants.

Dave Holecek spent part of a couple of days fishing for catfish. He caught three suribim (tiger catfish), a shovelnose catfish, and several redtail cats over 20 pounds. He had a giant redtail on for quite a while that pulled the boat around before throwing the hook.

Dave Holecek landed a 50-pound arapaima the first week, and Susan Mueller landed a 70-pounder the following week. There were two others landed the second week.

Mike Iftiger landed a 10-pound payara the first week. We landed around 20 during the second week. This is the most payara we have ever caught in a week at Agua Boa.

We also landed arowana, Oscars, pacu, silver piranha, black piranha, bicuda, dogfish, wolffish, jacunda, and more.

We saw a variety of wildlife, including Spider monkeys, red howler monkeys, tapir, wild hogs, freshwater dolphin, freshwater stingrays, giant Amazon River otters, giant macaws, wood storks, jabiru storks, shearwaters, multiple heron, egret, and shorebird species. We also saw black caiman up to 15 feet long, iguanas, and anacondas. Mike Iftiger had a 6-foot anaconda swim under the boat while they were eating lunch. While we were heading upriver through a shallow area, Dave Niehaus and I saw a 15-plus foot anaconda on the riverbank. It was in a spot that we couldn’t easily stop for pictures.

The river was the lowest I have ever seen it. It made the fish more confined but also spookier than usual. Normally, if you see a peacock chase your fly, it will get it. We had many refusals and still caught good numbers and some super-quality fish.

The lodge and bungalows are some of the nicest in South America. There is even a nice swimming pool, satellite TV, a dartboard, a ping pong table, and a pool table.

The lodge manager, Carlos, does a great job with the guides and staff. All of my clients have high praise for him.

We had another incredible trip at Agua Boa. Now you can understand why it’s my personal favorite fishing destination.
