Large rainbows - 20-pounds plus possible.
Hot specials for big rainbows and salmon.
This is one of those few areas in Alaska
where that
20-pound rainbow is possible. September is when the
big rainbows come down from Lake Iliamna – Alaska’s largest lake –
to feed on the eggs and flesh from the world’s largest sockeye run.
Lake Iliamna is 80-miles long by 20-miles wide. It’s the largest lake in Alaska. The Kvichak River (pronounced kwee-jack) is the only outflow for the lake. The Kvichak is the largest "highway" for salmon in the world and, the sockeye run is the largest salmon run of any kind in the world. The river is normally crystal clear, and its bottom is, for the most part, composed of polished stones and gravel.
The fishing season begins June 8th and extends to the end of September. The highlights are the trophy rainbow trout fishing--especially in the early and late portions of the season. The largest bows are caught in September. The sockeye salmon run is in early July and the silvers in August. They also have excellent grayling fishing throughout the season. The lodge policy is "Catch and Release" and is practiced for all native fish, but salmon may be kept in accordance with fish and game laws. Salmon catches, if desired, can be cleaned, vacuum packed and frozen for guests to take home.
Take a break from rainbow fishing, and fish a 4-weight for Arctic grayling, approaching 20-inches with dry flies. You’ll fish many braided areas that give you the feel of a small stream. The largest bows are caught in September. Knowledgeable guides welcome all levels of experience. Heavy-duty aluminum boats with Honda motors. Most packages are two anglers per boat and guide with nice, long fishing days.
